CircuitSweep

How to simplify an existing PCB in SolidWorks

Simplify PCB

Create a simplified PCB configuration for assemblies and drawings while keeping the full imported geometry in the source configuration.

CircuitSweep selects small bodies by size so you can review a group at once, instead of finding each one by hand. It works on suitable imported PCB parts, including STEP exports from Altium and KiCad opened through SolidWorks.

Review the selection before anything changes

Simplify PCB highlights the bodies selected to be left out. Adjust the filters, inspect the result and keep anything needed for mounting, connector access or clearance.

The selection is yours to correct. A small body may be mechanically important, and one electronic component can contain several bodies.

Keep a full model and a lighter configuration

CircuitSweep creates a child configuration named Simplified. Use it for mechanical work, then switch back to the source configuration whenever you need the full imported geometry.

You can update the selection in the same Simplified configuration. There is no need to create a new copy of the part each time you want a different level of detail.

This retains what was imported. It cannot restore bodies left out during an earlier Optimized import; start with Complete import if you need every body available.

Use the lighter configuration in your design

Set the PCB component in your assembly, and the relevant drawing views, to use Simplified. Creating it does not change existing configuration references automatically.

Review fit and references in the actual design. Mates and drawing references that use excluded geometry may need attention.

A configuration or a separate delivery part?

Keep both in the same part

Use Simplified while you still want the full source model available. Retaining both representations may not make the SLDPRT much smaller.

Share only the simplified result

New Part from Configuration saves a separate SolidWorks part from Simplified. Use it for a lighter delivery file; replacing the original may require mates or references to be recreated.

Permanent removal is also available when you are ready to discard geometry from the source part. It cannot be undone.

If the part still has a STEP link

CircuitSweep asks before breaking the link to enable simplification. Afterward, a revised STEP needs a new import and review rather than a live update through that link.

Open the Simplify PCB instructions for the selection controls, update behavior and undo consequences. The manual also covers delivery and permanent removal and breaking the STEP link.
